Richard Linklater and Criterion Break In The Violet Crown Cinema

If you want a chance to check out downtown Austin's new arthouse theater before it officially opens, the Austin Film Society has a special event on Wednesday night that you'll be interested in.

Richard Linklater has selected eight of his favorite titles in the Criterion Collection to show at Violet Crown Cinema. This special preview night will give you a chance to see some genuine film classics on the big screen and raise money for the Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund. Tickets are $13 (AFS members $10), and you can add a Double Feature selection for just $5 more.

Linklater, whose own films Slacker and Dazed and Confused have been released by Criterion, has curated a night that offers something for any film lover. You can check out The Times Of Harvey Milk, The 400 Blows, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Amarcord, Paris, Texas, Close-Up, Yojimbo and Vivre Sa Vie.

For more information on the Violet Crown, check out our interview with owner Bill Banowsky and read this Friday's Indie Picks column to learn about the opening films.
