One might argue that Wire is not a household name. But that depends on in which house you live. For a growing legion, the first-wave British postpunk band is one of the most influential artists of all time. Wire has been cited as an inspiration for or covered by R.E.M., Guided By Voices, the Cure, Mission of Burma, Minor Threat, Henry Rollins, Manic Street Preachers, Elastica (who were so inspired they got sued for plagiarism), the Feelies, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, the Minutemen and even My Bloody Valentine.

The band has explored punk, pop, psychedelia, electronica, industrial, ambient and just about every grey area in between, taking what it wants from each genre and fitting the pieces together in a puzzle of its own idiosyncratic design. That Wire’s current work on Send and the new Red Barked Tree is as forward-thinking and distinctive as its groundbreaking LPs Pink Flag and Chairs Missing says everything about the band’s continuing relevance.

Wire’s American tours don’t come to Texas often, and are few and far between anyway. This is likely to be one of those shows talked about in the Austin music community for years - don’t miss it if you don’t have to. Locals TV Torso open.
