Weekly Music Picks - I Heard the Countdown Start

SXSW Music begins on the 15th and ends on the 20th. That is all we are really thinking about right now. Later this week we'll be previewing some of the more noteworthy day parties, and we'll also be putting together a post detailing our recommendations for the official events.

Monday: Other than a Riverboat Gamblers service industry show(?) at Emo's, Monday is pretty slow. Take this opportunity to do some fingerpainting, maybe.

Tuesday: This is more like it - Motörhead plays Stubb's and Pack of Wolves play the afterparty at Emo's. The Flamingo Cantina is throwing a big "Brazilian Fat Tuesday Carnaval" at their place.

Wednesday: Starting at six, it's the "Official Austin Chronicle Music Anthology Release Party and HAAM Benefit," featuring The Skunks, Kathy McCarty, The Gourds, and more. We are running an interview with Doug Freeman and Austin Powell on Tuesday.

Thursday: The Reverberation Appreciation Society is having a big show at the Mohawk featuring Shapes Have Fangs, who are releasing a new album. Also playing: John Wesley Coleman III, Horse + Donkey, and Philip Sambol. No Mas Bodas have a new EP out, and they'll be celebrating with a show at Loft 718. We hear that Bodytronix and the experimental tap dancing outfit What's Tappening? will both perform.

Friday: New label Lower Records is hosting a party at the Broken Neck with Shitty Advice, The Stampede, Revenants, The Anchor, Young///Savage, and A Corpse Vanishes (hint: look in the freezer). The show is BYOB, all-ages, begins at 7pm, and they're asking for donations at the door. We're all over Local Natives and Gayngs, playing Stubb's, and there's a huge festival taking place Friday through Sunday called the Festival of Community Street Bands. Twenty bands are booked, and they'll be playing everywhere from City Hall to Cheer Up Charlies.

Saturday and Sunday: Yeast by Sweet Beast takes over the Chain Drive, and the Lamebook folks and their friends are hosting That Internet Party. Venue 222 will host The Black Angels on Saturday and Quintron and Ms. Pussycat on Sunday, all brought to you by Etsy. T.O.S. Violation didn't get the memo and starts SXSW early with sets from Thee Oh Sees, No Age, Ted Leo and more.
