Austin Reaches No-Kill Status

Last month, Town Lake Animal Center managed to save 92 percent of the animals that came through its doors. Reaching this milestone makes Austin the first major city in Texas to reach “no-kill status.” February marked the first time the city as successfully saved over 90 percent of shelter animals since the No-Kill Implementation Plan was put into effect last year.

In a City of Austin press release, Assistant City Manager Bert Lumbreras attributed some of the success to a moratorium on euthanizing animals when there is kennel space available. The press release also credited their achievement to "closing the night drop-off boxes; adding a full- and part-time veterinarian; enhancing the foster care program as well as low-cost/free spay and neuter services; and increasing the marketing and publicity efforts for adoption and animal services offered by the City."

Despite their success in February, TLAC is preparing for a busy spring, the time of year when the shelter and their partners are typically inundated with animals. In order to combat this influx in intakes, the City will be launching a campaign urging Austinites to spay and neuter their pets.
