Jucifer at Emo's [Show Preview]
Heavy music has long been dominated by power trios and the classic rock combo of two guitars-bass-‘n’-drums, but don’t bother mentioning that to Jucifer. Guitarist/singer Gazelle Amber Valentine and drummer Edgar Livenhood make plenty of racket without backup - indeed, the cochlea-obliterating volume of their live shows has become legendary. The couple has stripped their career down even further by abandoning their former Athens, Georgia base and living out of their RV, preferring a life of constant gigging and recording to anything so bland as a fixed address.
Jucifer began as one of the first new bands on the revived Capricorn Records in the 90s, but the label’s subsequent dissolution interrupted the band’s career. After a brief sojourn on Capricorn’s even more short-lived sequel Velocette, the duo’s sludge/doom/death metal found its natural home on the roster of metal titans Relapse Records, and Jucifer have laid waste to every club in their path ever since. The band comes to its regular Austin haunt Emo’s in support of its seventh record Throned in Blood. Eagle Claw, Baron Grod, Blood For Master and the Midnight Ghost Train open. Bring earplugs, no matter how macho you are.
