Indie Picks: At The Movies This Weekend
It's pretty quiet on local screens as we head into Oscar weekend, but for those of you who still need to catch up, many of the major nominees are still playing across town. It's a great weekend to do that, because there are no major releases that'll be opening today.
There's yet another climate change documentary (Carbon Nation) opening at the Regal Arbor if that's your thing. We sure wish that more interesting art house releases were available and are incredibly hopeful that more diverse bookings will hit town when the Violet Crown Cinema opens later this Spring.
Endhiran: The Robot (Alamo South)
It's not uncommon for Bollywood pictures to open locally. In fact, there are always a few playing down at the Cinemark Tinseltown 17 in South Austin. This weekend, the top-grossing Indian film of all time has been booked at the Alamo South for a special one week engagement. In many ways, this kind of film cancels out our previous rant about needing more interesting bookings in town (except that this is just getting one showtime a day for one week).
While we haven't yet seen Endhiran, the YouTube clip posted on the Drafthouse site seemed enough to recommend it. Then, we took a look at the keywords on its IMDB profile: Science Runs Amok, Evil Robot, Attempted Rape, Actor Playing Multiple Roles, Love Triangle. Sign us up!
All we really need to know is that this film was in pre-production for ten years and took two years to film and the score is by A.R. Rahman (who worked with Danny Boyle on Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours). Just in case you needed a warning, this Tamil langugage film is presented with English subtitles.
