In an interview leading up to last year’s SXSW, lead singer and guitarist of TV Torso, Matt Oliver, described his band’s sound by saying, “I have a guitar. That's it.” And that simple statement seems to sum up the band’s musical sensibility pretty well - it’s no frills, straight ahead rock with a classic bent and plenty of feel-good hooks.

This down-to-earth approach has yielded a lot of impressive results. They recorded their singles and subsequent full-length to tape in their own studio, pressed it all to vinyl for purchase and made it all free to stream download at Bandcamp. As a result, their releases have a crisp, intimate aesthetic that never sacrifices songwriting quality. Just listen to the atmospheric jaunt of “Two Glass Eyes” or the upbeat drive of “Slouch Hat City,” and you’ll realize just how good homegrown music can sound.

Earlier this month, TV Torso’s efforts landed them opening slots for Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Tokyo Police Club in Austin and Dallas. And as an added bonus at tonight’s TV Torso show at the Mohawk, you’ll also get to experience the loose, angular vibes of Austin’s YellowFever and Soft Healer. So get downtown for a taste of three Austin acts at the top of their game.
