Lakes Were Rivers, Book Release Party and Slide Show [Event Preview]

Are you the kind of person not satisfied with merely looking at art? The kind of person who needs their pretty pictures to come with a healthy dose of what-does-it-all-mean? In that case, this weekend brings just the event for you. Saturday evening, Domy Books will be holding a book release party for Austin-based art collective Lakes Were Rivers.

According to Katie Geha's introduction to the book, the photographs included in Lakes Were Rivers: Number One, "all contend with the basic function of the camera: the recording of life. They represent things in the world that have been made strange and compelling through the perspective of the artist—a fake plant placed on a lush carpet, a fleshy pink flower pressed against a sheet of plastic, a horse dead on the ground."

Photographs were paired so that they might begin to form a sort of pictorial narrative as well as highlight the untrustworthiness of photography as a medium. Again, from the introduction - "In each pairing there is both the image and how-to-read the image. It’s a game of correspondence."
