One of Austin’s more eccentric (and thus awesome) annual traditions, Misprint’s Beard and Moustache Contest marks its fifth year this weekend. Hosted by comedian Matt Bearden and featuring music from Salesman and DJs Andy the Mouth and DJxHC, the competition promises to bring hirsute males from all over the world eager to prove themselves the king of facial hair. Prizes will be provided by Austin Books, Freebirds Burritos, Austin Homebrew Supply and, um, Birds Barbershop (among others), but seriously - is winning as much the point as communing with one’s fellow facial hair fanatics? We think not.
To make the fifth anniversary even more special, the festivities spill over into the entire weekend. There’s the Austin Beard and Moustache Weekend Welcome Happy Hour at the Liberty Bar from 5:00-7:30, followed immediately by the East Austin Beard Parade and the Official Austin Facial Hair Club Contest Pre-Party at Shangri-La. The contest itself is preceded by the Texas Barbecue Tour, in which contestants can carpool from Rio Rita at 1 pm Saturday afternoon to the carnivore haven of Lockhart for some meaty delights. (Be sure to brush the crumbs from your beard before the contest.) After a night of alcohol and hair follicle abuse, a relaxing comedown may be had at Frank with the Sunday morning Beard Brunch.
Put that beard trimmer away and get ready to celebrate your face fuzz all weekend long.
