Soft Healer Bring the News to Beerland [Show Preview]

Austin’s Soft Healer are a little maddening in their coyness. About a year ago, the quartet started to build a little buzz with a handful of songs and local shows. But then, nothing: no album, EP, or even a single was released. It’s like the amazing date that never called back. Thankfully, the group is still in full-force, headlining Beerland Saturday night with some new music news in tow.

For the uninitiated, Soft Healer revel in a smoky, psych-fueled R&B vibe that’s unlike anything else in town. The bass is pushed up front along with lead singer Marie Butcher’s languid vocals, while guitarist Will Slack colors the edges with restrained stabs of reverb-heavy guitar. Occasionally, a saxophone will pop up to complement the dark-tinged soul, but the music is remarkable in its less-is-more approach.

Those tight-lipped Healers have admitted they’ve been working this past winter on a handful of releases. Expect a 10”, a 7”, and a full-length in the coming months. In the meantime, you can get those feet moving to their tight, fiery live sound.

Supporting Soft Healer is the hazy Rough Trade-indebted Love Inks, the experimental pop of Silent Diane, and the newly-formed Black Gum.
