A year removed from the release of their self-titled debut album, Austin’s Yellow Fever have kept a low profile. Then again, that’s how this perpetually cool band has always operated: they put their heads down, play a ton of shows, and crank out effortless pop songs. You can catch them tonight at Emo’s, where they will be performing with Air Waves and Hidden Ritual.
Yellow Fever first burst onto the scene in 2006 with a handful of singles and EPs. Boasting a former member of Voxtrot (Jennifer Moore) certainly didn’t hurt, but neither did the band’s songwriting prowess. They have a spare, measured sound, building repeated hooks over a sturdy foundation of drums, bass, guitar, and Moore’s laconic vocals. It’s disarming in its warmth, owing a great deal to that ‘80s Rough Trade aesthetic and standing in stark contrast to so many louder-than-loud Austin bands.
Air Waves just released their debut album, which matches Yellow Fever punch-for-punch in the charming category. Lead singer Nicole Schneit’s voice has more than a passing resemblance to that of Jana Hunter, but utilized in a poppier context. Austin’s Hidden Ritual opens the night with a collection skewed avant-pop tunes.
