There are more hipster indie rockers these days than there are Republicans in Texas government, and in that context it seems like No Age is just another band for Pitchfork to champion and the bearded and bespectacled to admire. But the Los Angeles duo’s lo-fi take on '80s college rock (its name comes from a compilation on the venerable SST label) and knuckles-to-the-grindstone work ethic boost it several notches up the (genuinely) cool scale. For every limited edition 7-inch single (like the five the band released on the same day on five different labels, with covers that spelled out its name) there’s a benefit show like its contribution to the Free Yr. Radio series of shows promoting indie radio. For every tour designed to give a hipster an instant orgasm (a la the NoDeachunter tour with Deerhunter and Dan Deacon) there’s a show promoting the group’s friends from the scene centered around L.A. underground club the Smell.
The band comes to Red 7 tonight (the show was moved from the Mohawk due to the inclement weather in store for tonight) in support of its acclaimed second (third if you count the singles comp Weirdo Rippers) album Everything in Between. After hitting The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson and gigging with the Hold Steady, Stereolab, Times New Viking and Los Campesinos!, No Age is ready for its headlining closeup. Rene Hell and Total Abuse get things rolling.
You can watch the video for “Losing Feeling” here and listen the band’s latest single “Glitter” here.
