Food: Tamale Trade At Whole Foods On Saturday

The holidays are the ideal time to make tamales with your family and friends, but let's be honest: it's kind of a pain in the ass to gather all of the ingredients, make the corn husk-wrapped suckers, cook them and then clean your entire kitchen.

Enter Whole Foods. This Saturday, the Culinary Center at the organic food emporium downtown is offering a three hour class that will teach you how to make the fillings and masa and show you how to wrap and steam the tamales.

Those attending this $65 class will make four types of fillings and three salsas, then everyone will be able take a few dozen home. Even better, roasted chile posole (a fiery pork stew with hominy) will be served during the class to fight any fatigue tamale-makers may experience. Seats are very limited for the 10:00 a.m. class and the 3:00 p.m. class, so be sure to reserve your spot soon at 512-542-2340.

I think it's a great idea! My family spends an entire day together every year during the holidays making tamales. . . it's a long process, but a tradition we've been celebrating for 8 years now and a recipe that was passed on from my grandma! Solid family time, lots of wine and of course a huge feast at the end of the day!

Instead of giving Whole Foods the money, just buy them from your housekeeper's aunt or sister who could use the $65. Just a thought...
