The Batusis at Lovejoys [Show Preview]
No, the Batusis is not a tribute band to the '60s Batman TV show. It’s even better: a collaboration between punk rock pioneers Sylvain Sylvain of the New York Dolls and Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys and Rocket From the Tombs. Both songwriters/guitar slingers boast roots that go back long before the punk explosion of the late '70s, so we’re not talking about revivalist also-rans here. We’re talking about the real thing, musicians for whom punk rock was a means of returning to the simplicity and raw power of real rock and roll. Hell, the term hadn’t even been bandied about when Chrome formed RFtT in Cleveland in 1975 and the Dolls were tearing up the Mercer Arts Center in 1972.
The duo’s four-song EP splits the difference between surf-inspired instrumental smart bombs and snotty vocal tunes - just what you’d expect from the talent and attitude on display here. The band - which on this trek includes bassist Sean Koos from the Blackhearts and drummer Lez Warner of the Cult - is hitting Austin for the second time since a landmark South By Southwest gig in March. This show is shake the walls down, especially with the likelihood of classics from the dynamic duo’s respective catalogs making appearances. And since it’s free, you really have no excuse not to check out two rock and roll icons blasting it out.
Houston’s Chelsea Hotel (featuring Robert Conn of Cleveland’s legendary Pagans) and locals Blower open.
The Batusis bash through “Here Comes Trouble” here and Johnny Thunders’ “I Wanna Be Loved” here.
