Indie Picks: At The Movies This Weekend

As far as new movies go, it looks like Austin is still in a tryptophan-induced coma this week. Still, we're only a week away from Black Swan and this also is a good excuse to get out and see some movies you haven't caught yet (like the Alamo's brilliant satire Four Lions).

It's also worth noting that last month's popular Music Monday feature Strange Powers: Stephen Merritt & Magnetic Fields is returning for one week of screenings at the Alamo Ritz.

A Film Unfinished (Regal Arbor)
Winner of the World Cinema Documentary Editing Award at Sundance, Yael Hersonski's documentary was picked up for distribution by the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch for his film company, Oscilloscope. He also rallied against the MPAA earlier this year when they gave this Holocaust documentary an R rating, because he felt that would keep it from being used as an educational tool.

The film presents raw footage that was shot by the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto in May 1942. Discovered after the end of the Third Reich, it shows staged sequences and fictionalized moments that were to be used in a propaganda film against Jewish people. Hersonski presents the unedited footage along with commentary from actual Ghetto survivors and, quite amazingly, one of the original German cameramen from the abandoned project.
