The Dresden Dolls 10th Bandiversary Closing Night [Show Review]

The Dresden Dolls delight in avoiding cliches. Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione want nothing more than to get you thinking - about the all encompassing lyrics, Brian's drum patterns, how hard Amanda bangs on the keyboard, whatever it takes for your brain to start spinning. Sunday night's closing stop on their 10th Bandiversary tour found no exception to this, as the duo thrust their all into every minute of the three hour set.

San Antonio's trio Girl in a Coma received the honor of opening for the Dolls. The Girls heartily warmed up the eclectic crowd with their own flavor of punk pop and set the stage for the marathon that followed.

After an emphatic greeting by the fans, the Dolls broke into the classic "Good Day" intimate acoustic guitar intro to cement the hook for their enthused fans, many of whom sported their own white make up and striped attire as an homage to the band. Palmer's easy banter weaved between tracks spanning all of their releases over the past decade. Multiple epic musical "storytimes" served as supplement for bed-time tales, while standard Sunday night sleep times blew quickly by over the course of a 3 hour long set.

The natural musical connection between Palmer and Viglione from ten years of jamming together evidenced itself throughout the night, as they precisely timed the ins and outs of songs, played off one another's strengths, flipping through tempos and styles all while clearly immensely enjoying their time on stage. Palmer's strong, clear vocals rang through her passionate keyboard strokes, while Viglione's thundering percussion perfectly complemented each song's particular style, easily switching from soft gushing mallet tones to solid rock licks. After performing "The Jeep Song" accompanied by a solid 20+ enthusiastic fans, including one flashing hula hoop, Palmer declared the night a rousing success.
