Goatwhore @ Emo's [Preview]

The poster for this show claims Black Metal Rides Texas and one can only shrug and mutter, “Ain’t it the truth.” The mighty Goatwhore, New Orleans’ blackest of the black, invades Emo’s outside stage the day before Hump Day, accompanied by a horde of their peers. Led by guitarist Sammy Duet, formerly of legendary NOLA sludge/psych monsters Acid Bath, and vocalist Louis Benjamin Falgoust II, also of the equally brutal Soilent Green, Goatwhore indulges its creators’ fondness for old-fashioned, riff-mangling, God-denying, Satan-worshipping black metal (or blackened death metal, if you prefer to split hairs while you bang your head) to the loudest degree possible.

Goatwhore is touring in support of its fourth album (and second for Metal Blade) Carving Out the Eyes of God, on which the quartet’s infernal sludge receives its cleanest production job yet, the better to parse every Satanic syllable Falgoust spits. (If lines like “Who needs a God when you’ve got Satan?” get your dander up, you might consider staying home with your Megadeth LPs.) Don’t expect any synths, sampled orchestras, suicidal introspection or any of the other trappings of the artier side of the extreme metal scene - just spikes, leather, ear-bleeding volume and a power and fury matched by few others in its class. Get ready to throw the horns for Goatwhore.

Tonight’s parade of evil is presented by 101X’s No Control Radio and topped by the highly acclaimed Swedish black metal troop Watain (carrying the torch for corpse paint). Averse Sefira, Black Anvil and HOD pummel the stage prior to Goatwhore.

You can watch the hair-whipping blasphemy of Goatwhore’s “Apocalyptic Havoc” here.
