At The Movies: Indie Picks This Weekend

Remember last week when we said that awards season movies were going to start flooding the marketplace and to see movies as quickly as possible? Well, there's one huge example of that this week, but the other lesson to be learned is that the biggest Hollywood pictures are making it rough for smaller films to hit town for the next two weeks.

With the latest Harry Potter film opening today along with next Wednesday's releases of Burlesque and Tangled, there's not a lot of screens to spare. Hell, even the Drafthouse has their OWN release, Four Lions, down to one showing a day at South Lamar by the time Wednesday rolls around.

127 Hours is the only limited release film opening for the next two weeks, but it's worth noting for those of you south of town that Fair Game expands to Tinseltown 17 today and financial documentary Inside Job is at the Regal Metropolitan 14. Otherwise, the box office is pretty squarely in Mr. Potter's corner.

Danny Boyle's career has been fascinating to watch because all of his films have been so different. From Trainspotting to the family film Millions to his Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, his creative and visually inventive style has brought a wildly varied group of stories to the big screen.

We caught his latest effort when it premiered at the Austin Film Festival and were just blown away. Based on the true story of what happened when Aron Ralston got trapped in an isolated canyon in Utah with a boulder crushing one of his arms, you could expect it to be difficult to craft a film about a man stuck in a hole and make it interesting. Boyle succeeds in every way, led by a career defining performance by James Franco. We expect that this one will find Boyle and crew meeting up with Oscar again soon.

Giving thanks for the Alamo
Quick reminder: if you're in Austin without your family or maybe you just don't feel like slaving away in the kitchen, spend an extra $25 at any Alamo Drafthouse location on Thanksgiving Day on any movie showing between 3-8 p.m. that will give you a turkey dinner with all the fixings to go along with your flick!
