By now pretty much everyone and their grandmothers knows who of Montreal is. A long-standing project of mastermind Kevin Barnes, the stage-filling outfit of enthusiasm has been plying their trade ever since the late nineties, and they've been taking one long victory lap these past five years through an endless hail of makeup, glitter, showmanship, and general glamfanatic mania. And now they're touring on the strength of this year's False Priest, an energetic return to form after the some-called-it-a-hiccup Skeletal Lamping. But they'll be sure to dig both the new tunes and some good oldies at their show at the up and coming potential paradise that is East Side Drive In.
Hopefully it's no secret, though, that one of the primary draws for this particular night of sonic spectacle is the opening act, who happens to be one of this year's breakthrough stars. Janelle Monae, of the shapeshifting musical ambitions and haircut, burst onto the scene earlier this year with The ArchAndroid, a massive stew of an album that ranges from r&b to indie rock to hip-hop to folk nearly seamlessly---if anything, the oddest fit on the album is the track contributed by, you guessed it, of Montreal. At any rate, this should be an action-packed evening with some old friends and some new ones, and a great opportunity to check out the East Side Drive In, if you haven't yet.
