It’s not often you hear about an up-and-coming indie act out of Columbia, South Carolina. It’s not like we’re saying there’s anything wrong with the capital city of the Palmetto State, quite the opposite. At first glance, the city doesn’t appear to have a glowing indie scene, but lift up your ears and you’ll hear groups like Heist and the Accomplice, the high school band of Chazwick Bundick of Toro Y Moi, coming from the coffee shops and spots like the New Brookland Tavern.

Toro Y Moi was Bundick’s side project until he finished school and refocused on Toro’s experimental pop, rock and roll and mesmerizing soundscapes sometimes described as chill wave. The music pulls from French House and R&B to name a few, and carries with it a lot of the influence from groups like Animal Collective and J Dilla in every high-pitched croon and chilled-out beat. Toro has been picking up steam well before the release of the debut, Causers of This. And Bundick, who’s in his early 20s, must be having the time of his life, endlessly touring and playing shows with Caribou, Pheonix and Foals. Seriously, he’s basically been on a constant tour ever since mid-May, and it’s not going to stop until late November.
