Fun Fun Fun Artist Preview: Man Man

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010
Saturday, November 6
Waterloo Park (403 E. 15th)

Man Man is kind of like a real life version of the Muppet Band. Their brand of musical stylings incorporates a quirky, theatrical dynamic which blends seamlessly with their experimental, multi-instrumental production. With zany stage names (Honus Honus, Sergei Sogay, Pow Pow, Critter Crat and Chang Wang) often paired with synchronized white outfits and war paint (worn for live shows), the extraordinary five-piece from Philly has certainly made a bold impression since forming in 2003.

Three albums deep, Man Man characterize their lively musical style as “Viking-vaudeville”, and “maniac Gypsy Jazz,” while Pitchfork has (endearingly) call them “spazz rock freaks.” Their style is based, literally, around piano and percussion, as the instruments are placed front and center for live shows. While front man Honus Honus (real name: Ryan Kattner) mainly sticks to the piano, the remaining three alternate on a plethora of instruments including the clavinet, flute, trumpet, sousaphone, saxophone, French horn, marimba, euphonium, xylophone and random percussive instruments. With the addition of their jangly group vocals, the result is a romping circus of musical mayhem, in the best way possible.

Man Man will bring the fun fun (fun) to the orange stage on Saturday at 6:55pm. Be sure to catch their special avant-garde act, as it will surely turn into a wild showcase you won’t want to miss.
