Why We Don't Like You: Iowa State Cyclones

Each week, we'll look at some reasons to taunt, belittle, and bully the Longhorns' football opponent. This week: the 8Iowa State Cyclones.

It's Next to Debbie Downer Arena: The Cyclones play their home games at Jack Trice Stadium, which carries the most tragic naming story of all time: "Jack Trice, Iowa State’s first black athlete, was also the first athlete to die for Iowa State. ... During the first half of the game he had so anticipated, Trice suffered a broken collarbone. He continued to play during the third quarter, until he was thrown on his back and trampled by three Minnesota players. He died three days later."

Your Contribution to the End of the World: The Iowa State campus in Ames played a major role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. As part of the Manhattan Project, Iowa State provided one-third of the uranium used in the first atom bomb.

A Stop Along the Way: Ames is a charming town, but for football coaches, it's proven to be just a temporary stop on the way to something better. Texas Coach Mack Brown was there 30 years ago as an assistant coach, and former Longhorns' defensive coordinator Gene Chizik spent two years there as head coach before bolting for Auburn.

In case you don't understand those are numbers. We used them to figure out how to refine the Plutonium that went into those bombs we dropped on Japan and saved millions of American and ally lives and ended the war much earlier than it would have without it. Oh ya and that's what we call history up here. We teach that too.
