The Magic Kids are adorable. This troop of fresh-faced tweens broke out at this year’s SXSW and made quite a buzz with their melodic, bubble gum hit “Hey Boy.” The six-piece’s subsequent debut, Memphis, was released in August and promptly received comparisons to light, candy-pop vibes popularized by The Beach Boys, Herman’s Hermits and Apples in Stereo.

The Magic Kids’ style is reminiscent of early ‘60s Californian hits. Their innocent approach to sugar-pop is hyper-focused on the bright side of life and comes alive in their energetic performances. Their infectious knack for pop is perfectly showcased in songs like “Summer,” “Skateland” and “Cry With Me Baby.” They flirt with carefree summer days, light-hearted love affairs, and the simplistic joys of youth.

While they’re debut album points to Memphis, this sextet is so fresh that it’s hard to say where their idealistic perspective actually came from. With so little band history, they could have very well come right out of a box of cereal. They keep things so sweet and cutesy that Nylon Magazine collectively has a “Band Crush” on them. One thing’s for certain, though - seeing them at this year’s Fx3 Fest is likely the only occasion they’ll ever share a bill with Gwar. Be sure to catch The Magic Kids take the Orange Stage at this year’s event.
