Montreal-based trio Land of Talk is the brainchild of multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist Elizabeth Powell. Powell emerged through Canada’s punk scene and developed an ongoing moonlighting gig with indie-collective/supergroup Broken Social Scene before forming Land of Talk in 2005. Since then, they have released three albums.

Since their debut with 2006’s Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, Land of Talk was adopted by Saddle Creek Records for the release of 2008’s Some Are Lakes and this year’s Clock and Cipher. Over the past five years the band has reorganized numerous times, but Powell’s dedication and their simplistic formula of guitar, bass, and drums continues to promise success. Land of Talk produces a nostalgic garage sound that sparks comparisons to The Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth.

Powell’s vocals are raw yet soft and melodic, reminiscent of early 90s indies like Riot Grrl champion Kathleen Hannah, femi-rocker PJ Harvey and bluesy swooner Cat Power. Chris McCarron and Eric Thibodeau form the backing band that balance out their winning dynamic. The trio has toured and collaborated with members of Stars, Arcade Fire and Besnard Lakes. Tonight they take the stage at The Parish with Suuns and Pink Nasty. Be sure to come on out for what will surely be an intimate showcase.
