In the midst of a grueling tour schedule - traveling throughout Europe in September and now making their way around the US - Deer Tick stops by Emo's tonight with J. Roddy Walston and the Business. And this is fresh off a performance on the Late Show with David Letterman in June, shortly following their latest release, Black Dirt Sessions.
Just as they breezily switch between an upright bass and standard electric bass for each song, the group easily mixes rock, folk, country and blues into captivating songs. Lyrics like "I am the dotted line and you fill me in with whatever you like" from 2007's debut release War Elephant are only made more effective by John McCauley's vocals and the clean throwback guitar sound. As Deer Tick's lead singer, McCauley's distinctive gravelly voice has drawn comparisons to Dylan, and is likely one of those that you either love or you definitely don't. Either way though it's worth it to find out which end of the spectrum you fall in!

While the show is a late one for the middle of the week, you'll want to stick around to the end of the set. One of the best surprises is which cover song Deer Tick will play as a finale - anything from "La Bamba" to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has been known to occur and always ends in a rocking good time.
