They say a rolling stone gathers no moss, and by that philosophy some people just can’t sit still. Such is the case for members of the Traveling Wilburys-esque supergroup, Monsters of Folk. Each member of this cooperative project carries a reputation for playing the field musically, and it might just be that zest for experimentation and thirst for musicality that makes them such a special act to see.

MOF consists of Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), and M. Ward (She & Him). While touring together with their respective bands in 2004, these fellas found time to collaborate on and off stage to bond their talents in an organic fashion. When they take the stage together they shed the identities of their previous affiliations. This is it. They enthusiastically take turns on vocals and exchange instruments, further emphasizing the fun of their experimentation. With Oberst’s insightful lyricism, James’ dreamy vocals, and Mogis and Ward on dueling guitars, their genuine admiration for one another and appreciation for the music they create is the glue that binds MOF. While their songs may be born of folk, MOF’s 2009 self-titled debut falls beneath the mighty umbrella of classic rock - fusing elements of blues, folk and country. The range of their dynamic is something quite captivating.

There’s really no telling the future for this ensemble. Their collaborations are subject to whatever structure their respective gigs allow. One thing is for certain - MOF are making the rounds this weekend. They will be playing an Official ACL Aftershow at Stubb’s Friday night and the festival itself on Saturday evening. If you were among the many who missed their ACL Studio taping this afternoon, we’ll have a full review of the show tomorrow.
