One of the more interesting, and unlikely, musical developments in recent memory was the resurgence in popularity of very smooth, very white, R&B-influenced "yacht rock." Have you been to a party in the past few years and not been accosted by some bookish type extolling the virtues of Steely Dan, Richard Marx, Hall & Oates, etc? Lucky you!
Enter Gayngs. Gayngs is a supergroup of sorts, featuring Jason Vernon of Bon Iver, producer Bryan Olson, and a loose-knit cast of up to twenty-five musicians, all with a soft spot for mellow keyboards and jazzy drumming. While the stage show might seem a bit kitschy--the members tend to wear things like white suits and headbands - Gayng's music is 100% quality. That's the main reason the group's full-length, Relayted, has become one of the surprise hits of the year. For a project that could have easily resulted in simple cliche-bashing, Gayngs has proven to be a musical force in its own right - witness the slow-building masterpiece that is "The Gaudy Side of Town" below, and click through to win some tickets.
Yes, because we love all of you, we're giving away two (2) tickets to the Gayngs Official ACL Aftershow this Saturday at Emo's. (The bill also features Bear In Heaven, who are equally great and sound kind of like yacht-rock from the future.) Just type your name-words into the screen-box below:
