- If you’ve lived in Austin for a while, you probably know that our city’s infamous Sixth Street was previously called Pecan Street. There’s also a fairly high probability that you’ve previously attended the gala that is The Old Pecan Street Festival. The event takes place twice a year and offers artists, musicians, and vendors from Austin and beyond a chance to showcase their wares to the city in a laid-back, family environment. The first one was held back in the spring of 1978 and the fall edition debuted in 1981.
The latest installment takes place this weekend and is presented by The Capital One Bank. As always, a whole slew of local acts will provide the soundtrack to the merriment down on 6th St. Check out the full lineup of bands for each day here -- Grupo Fantasma, The Hi-Tones, Missions, Death Is Not A Joyride, and Quiet Company are just a few of the many, many talented local bands you can catch this time. We encourage you to commemorate this Austin tradition with your near and dear ones, or at least swing by and take a gander. - Melodic metal masters Torche stop in at Red 7 on Friday in support of their new record Songs For Singles, released earlier this week on Hydra Head Records. The Fun Fest alumni will be preceded on stage by up-and-coming Austin instrumetal outfit Eagle Claw, who are scheduled to play the festival this year. Incidentally, Torche’s Steve Brooks will be back for Fun Fest with his prior project, cult favorites Floor. Red X Red M and The Grasshopper Lies Heavy ensure the blistering aural onslaught starts early.
- 101X’s Homegrown Live series rolls on this Friday at Beauty Bar. The latest edition, a pretty stellar pop-fest, delivers irresistible melodies galore from three capable local acts Hollywood Gossip, The Bubbles, and Sleep Good (complimentary Gatti’s Pizza to boot). On the same evening, Ruta Maya hosts Blue French Laundtry and Superpop!’s Friday Night Alright shindig featuring The Vitamins, Young Girls, Tiger Thrust, Sex Dragons, She Sir, and Ideal Soul Mart.
- Beloved North Loop spot The Parlor celebrates ten years in business this weekend. The Chumps, The Ritchie Whites, Manikin, and The Ape-Shits comprise Friday evening’s bill, while Stella & Umy (Cruiserweight), Becca and The Blancos, Mikey Sabatella, and Closet Drama dazzle the pizzeria on Saturday. The revelry wraps up on Sunday with live sets from The Baker Family, The Now and Nevers, and The Souljackers.
- The list of quality road shows in town this weekend, in addition to the aforementioned Torche concert, is quite lengthy (always a good thing!) -- pick from Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (La Zona Rosa), Drive-By Truckers (Stubb’s Outside), Jamie Lidell (Antone’s), Bowerbirds (The Mohawk), Jukebox the Ghost (The ND), and The Whigs (Emo’s Inside) on Friday, and Stone Temple Pilots and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (The Backyard), The Black Crowes (Stubb’s Outside), Sister Nancy at Scoot Inn, and The Drums (The ND) on Saturday. You could also head down to San Antonio on Saturday for either the momentous Jägermeister Music Tour (Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax) at the AT&T Center, or Lone Star Beer’s Bash @ The Brewery.
