Weekend Music Preview: Seaholm District Music & Art Fair [Saturday]

Downtown Austin already has a lot going for it. Between Sixth Street, the Warehouse District, Red River St. (or is it district), and the fairly new Second Street District, we’re blessed with an undoubtedly impressive city center. Now another little region has its own special label -- the City of Austin recently designated the entire area from Lady Bird Lake to 5th St. and from Lamar Blvd. to San Antonio St. as the Seaholm District.

The Seaholm Power Plant, an unmistakable fixture in that neighborhood, has already garnered our attention over the course of the last year. It hosted a jam-packed ACL Fest after-party featuring Broken Social Scene last October. And this past 4th of July, a handful of talented local acts delivered a sizzling prelude to the city’s fireworks display from the same spot. Jason Hicks had a hand in both those bashes, curating the former with WOXY (R.I.P.) during his time as Rare Magazine’s Director of Events, and presenting the latter with his current endeavor The Electric Company. Well, the fun and frolic isn’t restricted to just the power plant facility anymore, and Hicks is taking full advantage of the expansion.

This Saturday, The Electric Company brings us the Seaholm District Music & Art Fair, an enticing extravaganza of Austin flavor that offers something for everyone. Expect plenty of live music (list of bands below), numerous eateries to whet and satisfy your appetite, on-site installations by a slew of promising artists, and even a whole host of shopping options. Those die-hard Texas fans can rest easy too -- the UT football game (against Texas Tech) will be broadcast live on a massive 40" screen.

Saturday’s celebration of this lively new zone will be centered at 3rd and Nueces. The gathering is free, all ages, and benefits Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.

It's almost 1:30, the event started at noon, and some vendors are still setting up. The event is billed as environmentally friendly, but there are no recycle bins onsite. The turnout is light- maybe 200 people thus far. I think the organizer needs to step it up next year, or get a new organizer.
