It's a tribute to the quality of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections that the book was able to rise above the shite-storm of controversy that surrounded the author's decision to play hard to get with the most powerful woman in the world. Nine or so years later, Franzen is back with an even more aggressively confrontational (and hilarious and moving, we're betting) book called Freedom. Oprah's on board along with the president and the New York Times Book Review, who called Freedom - Franzen's fourth novel - "a masterpiece of American fiction."
Franzen will be in Austin to sign copies of his new book, and starting at 5:30 on Friday, BookPeople will begin giving out wristbands for the signing. They add that while the event is free, "if you would like something signed and would like a wristband for the signing line, you must have a copy of Freedom purchased from BookPeople."
Also: "Jonathan Franzen will sign all copies of Freedom purchased from BookPeople. He will also sign any copies of his backlist titles purchased from BookPeople." Dig out that copy of Strong Motion, people! Hope you kept your receipt.
"He will sign up to two books from home, as long as you have also purchased Freedom from BookPeople." Wait, like any book? We're bringing Tekwar and The Secret.
"No photography or video recorders please." Hilarious amusement park-style caricature drawings? More than okay.
