The last time many of us checked in with the Verve Pipe, they were still lamenting "what made us think that we were wise/ and we'd never compromise" because "we were merely freshmen." The success of the abortion-suicide ballad "Freshmen" was a blessing and a curse, something the band straight-up referenced on "The F Word," a song on their eponymous, not-so-hotly received 1999 album.
Has the Michigan band finally shaken off the million-dollar millstone of their ginormous hit? Apparently so, as their newest, kids-friendly record A Family Album appeals to an age group blissfully unaware of late-nineties rush into pop-studded songs with a Serious Message. That's right - The Verve Pipe are playing the Austin Kiddie Limits Stage this year, as it was either that or go geezer with a standards collection. The band has a "rock album" planned for the future, but for now it's songs about waking up and going to school ("Wake Up"), cereal ("Cereal") and bedtime ("Go To Sleep Now"). The album artwork, featuring a grumpy cat by Kate Cosgrove, is pretty freaking adorable.
