What’s more absurd: a puppet karaoke rendition of a little girl’s letter to Jesus, or that such a song exists and was allegedly a radio hit thirty years ago in Houston? That’s the off-beat, comedic genius behind Matt Bearden’s awkwardly-hilarious rendering of “Dear Mr. Jesus,” which he shared with an adoring crowd of metal-head scenesters when he opened for Brian Posehn at Red 7 last month.
There’s no doubt that Matt Bearden is a local favorite and a staple figure in Austin’s improv and stand-up circuits. Over the last ten years he’s been a regular at Cap City Comedy Club and Misprint’s annual Beard and Moustache Competition. Known for his smart and often self-depreciating observational humor, Cap City Comedy Club deemed Bearden the “Funniest Person in Austin” in 2002 and he was voted “Best Comedian” in The Chronicle’s annual round-up back in 2008. Over the years Bearden has become somewhat of a local celebrity, with appearances on MTV’s short-lived series Austin Stories, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, a comedy tour with Dave Chappelle, and bit parts in movies Wrong Numbers and The Journeyman.
After playing emcee at Fun Fun Fun Fest’s official press conference, we can all rest assured that Bearden is well aware of the fun quota necessary for this year’s event. Be sure to catch Austin’s favorite mustachioed comedian when he delivers his brand of witty satire at Fx3’s Yellow Stage on Saturday, Nov 6th.
