Perry Snubs Newspapers for Social Media [Politics]

The Rick Perry campaign has announced that the governor will not be meeting with any newspaper editorial boards before the election. Perry's spokesperson Mark Miner announced that the campaign will continue to talk to reporters at scheduled stops and to focus on social media. It's not the first time Perry has chosen to pass over the papers--the question is whether they can come back to haunt him.

Perry's decision to avoid the old-media gatekeepers contrasts greatly with Bill White's activities lately: Jason Embry at the Statesman reports that White met recently with the Killeen Daily Herald, "which isn’t exactly a traditional stop for gubernatorial candidates." The date Obama came to Austin, White was meeting with an editorial board in Abilene.

Perry's de facto refusal to debate White, coupled with this latest announcement, have given the former Houston mayor ample ammunition to characterize the governor as arrogant. But does it matter? After all, Perry also declined to meet the newspapers on their own turf before the Republican primary, and then went on to trounce Kay Bailey Hutchison.
