Published this April by the University of Texas Press, House of Hits is the story of Houston's Gold Star/SugarHill Recording Studios, as told by Andy Bradley, "SugarHill's chief engineer for the past 25 years," and Roger Wood, English Professor and author of the books Texas Zydeco and Down in Houston: Bayou City Blues. Gold Star/SugarHill Recording Studios was founded in 1941 in Houston, and over the years has hosted artists ranging from Lightnin' Hopkins to the 13th Floor Elevators to Beyoncé. The book details "how Houston's lack of zoning ordinances allowed founder Bill Quinn's house studio to grow into a large studio complex, just as SugarHill's willingness to transcend musical boundaries transformed it into of one of the most storied recording enterprises in America."
Tonight the Hyde Park Grill (the original location, on Duval) is hosting the authors at a reception. The meet and greet will feature complementary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar at happy hour prices. Additionally, profits from books sales are going toward the SIMS Foundation for Austin musicians. Come out, listen and learn, and support a great cause - not bad for a Wednesday night, we think.
