Le Diamant Brut: The Young Maths & Burgess Meredith
What’s the Deal: At the Southern tip of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley is where you’ll find the sharp and anxious dance punk sounds of The Young Maths. Their sound settles somewhere in the vein of earlier Hot Hot Heat (who are actually playing at Emo’s on August 27th) on several tracks, with a high energy that is transmitted via pokey guitar angles, a knee-quaking beat and higher pitched, frenzied vocals.
Exploring their 6-song EP, Thank You, Goodnight! We are , you’ll likely be making a stop at one of their dance grooviest numbers, “Fingered on the Dance Floor,” first, if for no other reason than the bold title. But, you might stick around for the controlled mayhem of screeches, screams and a quickened beat that beckons a shimmy shake.
Something Interesting: You can catch them Tuesday night at The Mohawk on the inside stage with San Antonio’s Búho and Darm Darm Dudes.

What’s the Deal: Their second performance was the First Friday Frolic at Club de Ville August 6th alongside The Ovenbirds. Their set was punctuated by occasional sound clip intros featuring memorable phrases once uttered by the actor they honor in name, and this seven-member indie folk troupe presented an arrangement of strong, well-practiced tunes including a cover of Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs’ “Lil’ Red Riding Hood.” With the help of backup harmonies, tambourine, keys, xylophone, trumpet and a light vocal effect here and there, the group has built a steady, fun sound, and they can only improve as they tuck more shows under their belts.
Something Interesting: The group contains many members of other Austin groups you might recognize, such as Bankrupt and the Borrowers, The Lemurs, and Mike and the Moonpies.
