Austin Public Library - Twin Oaks Branch (1800 S. Fifth St. Austin)

In 1998, Austin voters approved funding to give the Twin Oaks Library (then situated in the Twin Oaks shopping center) some new digs. And oh, what splendor! The new library is situated at 1800 S. Fifth Street, and is quite a resplendent thing. Eye-catching architecture and many conveniences for bibliophiles reveals a marriage of form and function; read more and see more from this piece in Rare Magazine.
The press release boasts that this new library is significantly green, and "equipped with a rainwater harvesting system as well as a day lighting control system that dims electric lamps when the building has sufficient daylight for reading and other activities." Also, "reused bricks salvaged during the demolition of the old South Austin Post Office building which formerly stood on the site were used for construction," and "the building also includes 15 huge timber trusses made of reclaimed Douglas Fir which saved about 30 large trees."
The grand opening is on August 21st, a Saturday, at the early hour of 10 a.m. The opening will feature a "a building dedication ceremony, live music by the swinging Academy of Jazz Players, and abundant food and drink from local South Austin vendors."
