Down to earth music critic Rob Sheffield, lately of Rolling Stone magazine and previously of Blender, is coming to Austin in support of his newest book Talking to Girls About Duran Duran. The memoir, which came out this month, posits the ages-old argument about the differences between the sexes. In this book, Sheffield's logic hinges on the way women approach music, specifically the music of British synth-pop heartthrobs Duran Duran. To quote from the introduction: "Loving Duran Duran has been one of the constants in my life, but I have no idea what they would sound like if the women in my life stopped loving them. I guess I'll never know. I could claim that Duran Duran taught me everything I know about women, but that's not exactly accurate: I learned it from listening to girls talk about Duran Duran."

The Austin American-Statesman's Joe Gross will participate in a discussion with Sheffield at BookPeople this evening. BookPeople is also having a contest to promote the book and reading. All you have to do is send your "CRAZIEST/MOST EMBARRASSING/MOST AWESOME photo from the 80′s" to the people at BookPeople with "80′s Photo Contest" in the subject line, and you could win both a copy of Sheffield's new book and some internet notoriety.

Please keep up the awesome book preview articles. A little bit more advance notice on these author readings would be helpful, though. Day-of is a bit tough to swing.
