Formula 1 Track Site Revealed; Red McCombs Signs On

Two more details were released today about the Austin group's plans to bring a Formula One race to the city in 2012, but neither involved putting a shovel in the ground to build a track from scratch in two years.

Full Throttle Productions announced today they plan to build the track on about 900 acres in southeastern Travis County. The land is between Elroy Road and McAngus Road, east of Highway 130. The undeveloped land was previously planned for a residential subdivision called Wandering Creek, according to the Statesman.

The second piece of news today was that San Antonio car dealer Red McCombs has signed on as an investor for the project. McCombs is the former owner of the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Vikings and UT's business school bears his name.

In May, Formula One announced that Austin would serve as the host city of the United States Grand Prix for 10 years, beginning in 2012. They also announced "a world-class facility will be purpose-built to host the event".

Full Throttle's Tavo Hellmund insists that track designers have visited the site and have been working on a design. Those plans have not yet been unveiled and no construction has begun at the site.

Formula One: Shrouded In Secrecy With No Public Involvement

We, the people of Austin, have had zero input in any of the decisions surrounding this Formula One racetrack deal. This is wrong.

It isn't in the city limits of Austin. Why should douches like yourself have a say in something that isn't your land, in your city, or have much to do with you at all. Other than the huge positive economic impacts that Austin is sure to see. People like you make me sick.
