Celluloid Handbag Presents Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were longtime Hollywood rivals, but they knew this thriller could help reinvigorate their careers. The movie became a huge hit at the box office, and Davis was even nominated for an Academy Award for her performance. Director Robert Aldrich attempted to reunite with his lead actresses again two years later for Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte, but Crawford dropped out of filming due to illness, so this remains your only chance to see this bitchy dream team in action!
Havemayer is encouraging the crowd to come out in full force for the show, and show their support for either TEAM DAVIS or TEAM CRAWFORD. She suggests showing up with big eyebrows for Joan and white face with mole for Bette.
To further whet your whistle, each month's Celluloid Handbag will be featuring short films that have been handpicked from gay and lesbian film festivals across the country.
Next month, the Christopher Guest mockumentary Waiting For Guffman will be featured, and we've been told that the months ahead will be filled filthy treats like The Hunger and even the grandaddy of gross-out cinema, Salo, or the 120 Days Of Sodom. Nothing says 'date night' like taking your lover to see that on the big screen!
