Weekend Music Preview: Save Our Gulf & Black Gold Disco!

It’s been hard to ignore the atrocities triggered by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Whether it’s the heartbreaking pictures of birds embalmed in grease or true stories of friends who have lost their livelihood, the disaster remains front and center on most people’s radars. British Petroleum can redirect its homepage to some messaging about its response all it wants but the truth of the matter is that so much more is needed, and we can all do a little bit to assist. Austinites never shy away from helping out our neighbors, and this weekend, there are two events that benefit the affected region. On Friday, Save Our Gulf, featuring music from Papa Mali and Lost Bayou Ramblers, and a shrimp boil (for the suggestion donation of $10 per plate) will take place in Hotel San Jose’s parking lot. Learn more about this extravaganza via our post from Sunday.

Beauty Bar hosts Learning SecretsBlack Gold Disco! shindig on Sunday. Suggestion donation for this is also $10 but as the organizers put it, “If all you can spare is $3 then that's totally radical too! Donating is awesome! Doing it whilst partying harder than you have all summer is even more bodacious, and we want to do it together with you!” Proceeds go towards saving the wildlife (Endangered Species Coalition) in the Gulf; entertainment comes in the form of Bodytronix’ intriguing aural experiments, Candi and The Strangers’ charming dream-pop concoctions, and the always enjoyable DJ sets by the lads from Learning Secrets. And perennial do-gooders Birds Barbershop plan to going to donate $1 for every Lone Star purchased to the cause as well. All in all, anything you can offer up is acceptable and appreciated -- sounds pretty reasonable to us.
