Phosphorescent Break New Ground at ND [Giveaway x 2!]
After years of successfully crafting the kind of spare, smoky folk best set in the introspective blear of a middle-of-nowhere spirit journey, Matthew Houck has turned his mind and his musical output toward the exuberance of the full-blown country spectacular. That means pedal steel. The shift in his approach is reminiscent of another haunting guy-with-guitar who took his echoing solo work into the world of country, but in his case with a classic rock spin: Jason Molina of Songs:Ohia, and later, Magnolia Electric Company. By many accounts, though, Houck’s evolution with Phosphorescent is even more dynamic, and can likely be attributed to his 2008 album covering Texas’ great Willie Nelson. Truly, the Alabama-born musician's embrace of a bigger, more rollicking sound has been a hit so far: his newest album, Here’s to Taking It Easy, is a wonderland of seventies-style country embellished with indie production techniques and, as always, his pained, searching voice. Get a chance to check out the big show tonight at one of town’s newest music venues, the ND just east of the highway—if his shows of the past are any indication, it’ll be a good one.
Opening up are the Denton black metal (nice contrast, yes?) outfit Shiny Around the Edges. For a chance to vision and listen this night of goodness, click after the jump---we're giving away dos pairs of tix this time.
