Storm Watch: Hurricane Alex

For those not outside, near a window, or stuck in traffic yesterday afternoon, Austin got a good dose of summer rain . . . and that may be just the beginning.

Yesterday's rain was related to Tropical Storm Alex (now upgraded to Hurricane Alex, category 1). This afternoon through Saturday, at least three to six inches of rainfall could be headed towards South Central Texas.

However, Austin gets off relatively easy. The main body of Alex is on a path towards the Gulf coast, just south of the Texas-Mexico border -- a path that would at the least bring efforts to contain and clean-up the BP oil disaster to a stop.

Making matters worse, the system could make it to Category 2 status.

Until Alex makes landfall, how much damage will be done can only be speculated. Flooding is expected in areas stretching from South to Central Texas. Be safe.

I am disappointed that the storms aren't being named for oil companies this year.

Anadarko, BP, Chevron, Devon, Exxon, First Texas, Gazprom, Hess, Inpex, Jay oil, Korea National, LUKoil, Marathon, National Iranian, Occidental, Pemex, Qator General, Royal Dutch Shell, Sonatrach, Tesoro, Ucimet, Venoco, Wintershall, XTO. Yukos, Zorro.

Enough for 26 hurricanes, and there's more!
