One of Texas’ favorite daughters,
Patricia Vonne celebrates the release of her fourth full-length
Worth It this evening at
The Continental Club. Vonne was born in San Antonio but spent some time honing her musical chops in New York before moving back to the Lone Star State in 2001. Upon her return, she refined her stellar self-titled debut (recorded in NY for the most part), eventually offering it up to the masses in 2002 via her own label
Bandolera Records. She followed that up with
Guitars And Castanets in 2005 and
Firebird in 2007 -- the three records went a long way in establishing her as one of the State’s most talented singer-songwriters. The prolific Vonne has even found time to sustain an acting career over the years, appearing in her brother Robert Rodriguez’ 2005 film
Sin City and also surfacing in movies such as
Spy Kids,
Four Rooms, and
Desperado prior to that.
Recorded in Austin with Carl Thiel, Worth It showcases both her inherent gift for imparting an affecting tale and her penchant for melodious Americana tunes, and is an impressive conglomeration of the sounds of Texas. The album contains a number of irresistible, radio-ready tracks like “Cut From The Same Cloth” (with Joe Ely and Rosie Flores), “Truth Awakening,” and “Love Is A Bounty”; further highlights include the flamenco flavored “Fuente Vaqueros” (featuring Rick Del Castillo) and the stomping “Cowskulls and Ghostowns” (co-written with Shawn Sahm). When all is said and done, Worth It is a truly noteworthy effort by the charming Texan songstress and will surely serve as an apt backdrop to many a day spent in the vast confines of our great State.
