On tour supporting last year's Is and Always Was album alongside producer Jason Falkner, Daniel Johnston is only playing one Austin show the entire year, and the Mohawk's got it.

While Johnston is known for playing only sporadically and canceling often, it still seems strange that he already knows he playing only once in town this year...when it's only June. Still, we suppose that's all the more reason to head out and see the chatty musician when he plays this weekend.

Falkner - who lent a lighthearted, electronic touch to Is and Always Was - already had an established career long before pairing up with Johnston to produce this album. Formerly a member of Jellyfish, Three O'Clock and The Grays, he was a formative figure in '90s power pop prior to striking out on his own. In 1999 the stars seemed to align for the man - his solo record Can You Still Feel was produced by Nigel Goodrich and released by Elektra. Nevertheless, Falkner never became a household name but has continued to make solo albums, tour with other bands and even release covers of Beatles songs made for babies. His last solo album All Quiet on the Noise Floor was released last year.

Three local bands will open for Falkner and Johnston. The first is Brackett and Co., featuring Scott Brackett (also of Okkervil River) and some of his pals from that band and from Lil' Cap'n Travis. As far as we know the band doesn't have an official release, but that shouldn't stop you from checking out their page and previewing some tunes.

Also performing are the enterprising Sour Notes, whose album It's Not Gonna Be Pretty came out at the beginning of this year. We've seen them live at least once before, and enjoyed their semi-sweet take on the pop song. Comedian Matt Bearden (with zany mustache) will also do a set, and a guy named Brian Brewer is also scheduled to perform...something. Sir, you are difficult to find on the internet, but we're looking forward to your mystery set of comedy/music/puppet show very much.
