Around 2007 or thereabouts you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting a member of a six-piece Montreal band fronted by a husband and wife team. That was the year The Besnard Lakes release their second album The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse on Jagjaguwar, and while it fit within the bounds of big, melancholy rock from our Neighbors to the North, The Besnard Lakes crafted orchestral-rich and haunting songs with just enough sweet harmonies and bold noise to separate them from the pack. This year they released the follow-up The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night, and it builds upon and improves the band’s modus operandi - check out the single “Albatross” with its woozy guitar and the subtle/sweet vocals of Olga Goreas.
Joining the band at the Mohawk are the Norman, Oklahoma rock group Stardeath and White Dwarfs. And while the band must get weary of hearing this over and over, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that the band includes Dennis Coyne, nephew of The Flaming Lips’ Wayne. Last year the band released their first album The Birth, and they also contributed to The Flaming Lips’ cover of Dark Side of the Moon. Providing local support are The Boxing Lesson, who just recently recorded their new album Possibilities.
While all this business is taking place outside, the local band Leatherbag are having a cd release party for their new album Hey Day, a full collection of folksy and country-infused solid rock. Opening the festivities are Common Loon, a dreamy, old-school indie project based out of Illinois.
