Renegade Craft Fair Interview: Squid Ink Kollective

This week, the Austinist will be bringing you interviews with selected artists who are participating in this weekend's Renegade Craft Fair.

Based out of Austin, Squid Ink Kollective is a screen printing shop run by Brian Maclaskey and Lynnea Edwards. They sell their fabulous designs printed on hoodies, linens, tees, totes and more - their way of making art accessible to everyone. The shop offers high quality screen printed items at affordable prices, but it's their cheeky sense of play that really makes their work stand out.

We got a chance to talk to Brian about the history of Squid Ink Kollective, CatTaurs and the exciting and interactive item they'll have at their booth this weekend.

Hi Brian! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Lynnea and I are both Texans, but she lived in Norway with her mum for several years, and we both just moved to Austin from Denton, TX last August.

Tell us a little bit about your company.

After art school I wanted to create work that was more accessible to the masses. I am a trained printmaker, and I love screen printing! Lynnea and I have been together for 8 years now, and we really are enjoying the project as an evolving collaboration. Squid Ink Kollective was started in 2007 and has been growing since!

Is this your first time at a Renegade craft fair event?

Yes it is, we have wanted to get involved for a while now, but now feel that we are ready! We are super excited, it has been really cool to watch Renegade evolve, the Renegade Handmade store was one of the first shops to carry our wares!

What can craft fair attendees expect to find at your booth?

You can expect to find a lot of silly printed goods including tees, bags, linens, and some art prints!

We will also have a photo prop where you can get your picture taken as a mountain, so everyone should come by and do it, and post it to our photo stream!

What item from Squid Ink Kollective would you like to receive as a gift?

I think I would definitely enjoy receiving a Cattaur t-shirt, one must be brave to rock this tee! Lynnea would want some Squid linens.

Are there any other artists whose work you're looking forward to seeing at Renegade?

Wow, we love seeing all of the locals, but everyone looks amazing and we are overwhelmed and excited to see everything!

Be sure to see Squid Ink Kollective's work in person this weekend at the Renegade Craft Fair. Check out our preview for more info.
