Austin's Dogfather, Lee Mannix, Dies In Car Accident
Mannix, 40, opened the Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior in 2002 with the goal of improving relationships between people and their pets. He was considered a specialist in aggressive dogs and the last stop for many owners whose pets showed severe behavior problems.
"We are all in shock and disbelief at this loss," said Shari Elkins, spokesperson for the center. "Lee was an exceptional trainer with an amazing heart."
The accident also left Mannix's brother, Kevin Mannix, is stable condition.
Condolences have been pouring in to the center's Facebook page since the news was posted earlier today.
This 2009 profile in the Statesman said that Mannix, whose tattoo read "The Irish Dogfather", would receive about 100 new client inquiries a day, some from as far away as France and Ireland. Some of his better-known clients included musician Jimmie Dale Gilmore and former gubernatorial candidate and author Kinky Friedman.
Elkins said the training center will resume normal business hours on Tuesday as the trainers and staff seek to continue Mannix's mission. Memorial donations can be made to the Schrodi Training Fund. Information about a memorial service will be announced.
