Pachanga: Five Minutes With Vallejo

Leading up to Pachanga (May 21st and 22nd at Fiesta Gardens), we’ll be spending five minutes with many of the artists scheduled to perform at the festival. Today, we catch up with Austin’s Vallejo.

What does a perfect Pachanga entail?

A sunny day full of great Latin music and families of all ages having a great time.

Does Austin deserve to host a Latino Music Festival?

Absolutely. Austin has a great Latin music scene and without sounding too ‘raza’ proud, most of the popular bands in town have been groups like Grupo Fantasma, Del Castillo, Los Lonely Boys, Alejandro Escovedo, Davíd Garza, etc.

Flaco Jiménez or Selena?

Our Tio Ignacio had a Tejano club in the 70’s and 80’s so we grew up with both of them but musically we prefer Flaco. We’re actually trying to get him to play on the next Vallejo record. So Flaco…if you’re reading this please give us a call!

What is right or wrong with the music industry today?

Live shows will always still be right and radio is what’s wrong with the industry. Bands or labels don’t have radio and MTV to help build bands like they used to. I actually listen to internet and satellite radio, or watch videos I want to see on YouTube since MTV now only plays stupid reality shows. Play some f*cking videos again for goodness sakes!!! What happened to real shows like MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball?

If you could invite one musician, living or dead, on stage with you, who would it be?

Frank Zappa.

Thank you for spending five minutes with Austinist.
