Pallett's 2006 release, He Poos Clouds, earned him the Polaris Music Prize and he's been active far beyond the full-lengths adn 7"s he's released. He's a noted a composer and score-writer, contributing to projects with Stars and Grizzly Bear as well as providing the live score for the 1919 silent German horror film Tales Of The Uncanny at a festival in Toronto.
His latest full-length, Heartland, is a sprawling, operatic pop gem that carries on the tradition Pallett began with Final Fantasy. As always, his violin and his soaring coos take center stage, and the plot -- a narrative concerning a young, ultra-violent farmer named Lewis, set in the imaginary landscape of Spectrum -- follows a relationship from its beginning to end. For the recording, Pallett used the Czech Philharmonic in Prague and traveled to Reykjavik to use Valeifgr Siggurdson’s Greenhouse studio. He also worked again with Jeremy Gara (of Arcade Fire) and mixer Rusty Santos (Person Pitch).
The record is absolutely brilliant and beautiful, and Pallett's live shows are no different. He uses a looper to create layers of violin and vocals. He's also known to cover a Mariah Carey song once in a while, so you don't want to miss it. Pallett will be at The Granada Theater on April 29 (buy tickets here) and the Mohawk on April 30 (see link above), so buy your tickets now -- this one will sell out.
