Austin Psych Fest 3: Five Minutes With Christian Bland & The Revelators

Leading up to Austin Psych Fest 3 (April 23rd - 25th at The Mohawk), we’ll be spending five minutes with many of the artists scheduled to perform at the festival. Today, we catch up with Austin’s Christian Bland & The Revelators.

What does the term "psychedelic" conjure up in your mind?

The weird world of LSD, Alice in Acid Land, Electric Jugs, and mind expansion.

Does Austin deserve to host a psychedelic music festival?

Austin's the birthplace of psychedelic rock n' roll. If ever there was a place to have a psychedelic music fest, this is it!

Roky Erickson or Stevie Ray Vaughan?

Stevie Ray Vaughan represents soulless white boy blues. Roky Erickson has soul spilling out of his every pore. The SRV statue on Auditorium Shores should be replaced by a Roky Erickson statue. (In fact, I'm searching for a sculptor to help me with this project.) There should be murals of the 13th Floor Elevators and Roky Erickson all over the city, but people are scared to honor rebels. Maybe in 100 years people will finally get it. SRV will be long forgotten in the annals of music history and the legend of Roky Erickson will live forever.

What is right or wrong with the music industry today?

Today’s mainstream music is the most awful auto-pitched garbage to grace the face of this planet. The music on the radio today compared to the rock n' roll of the 50's and 60's is so uninspired and uncreative that it makes my stomach hurt. The music of the 50's and 60's came out of a backlash against society. I think that soon there will be a huge backlash against the trash the media forces over the airwaves. This backlash will come in the form of psychedelic rebellion through creative, inspired, soul filled music.

If you could invite one musician, living or dead, on stage with you, who would it be?

I think Syd Barrett would be a nice addition to the Revelators.

Thank you for spending five minutes with Austinist.

    RIP Stevie

Would somebody please punch this douchebag in the face?

We get it Christian...you are so non-mainstream.... you're still terribly uninformed and have no sense of Austin Music History....

A punch in the face seems a little extreme Anti-Hip, and I'm pretty sure the 13th Floor Elevators and Rocky Erickson are indeed a big part of Austin Music History. You must be a relative of Stevie Ray Vaughn, someone who enjoys having American Idols rammed down your throat, or both. Maybe you should do the world a favor and punch yourself in the face.

Your comparison of Stevie to the American Idol pop machine further accentuates the misunderstanding and revisionist history you and Mr. Bland so falsely (and viciously, I might add) perpetuate.

In no way am I knocking Mr. Erickson's well deserved place in history.

Please, I implore you to do a little research on Stevie's life and his path to "success" (gasp!).

You just might gain a little appreciation.
